With the sun shining Horsham Cricket Club looked its best for the annual Colts Awards event on Sunday 8th September. This year the event shared the location with a St Lucia fixture, between the Ministers X1 vs St Lucia Partners X1. A steel band added to the noise, a barbecue added to the aroma, and the marquee and the hubbub turned it into a real Caribbean festival. The distinctly West Indian tones of the announcer combined with the gorgeous weather, almost made spectators think they had taken a wrong turning, and were not in Horsham but on a sun drenched Caribbean island. Playing in the St Lucia match was the former Yorkshire and England fast bowler Darren Gough and he stepped forward to present the awards to the Colts cricketers. He had words of encouragement for all the boys, saying that he struggled to get in any cricket team at the age of 11, but by the time he was 16 he was playing representative cricket for not only his own year, but for the age groups above him. Congratulations to those that won this year, but those that didn’t should work at their game and maybe their time would come. There were two awards for all age groups ranging from U9s to U16s, the Most Valuable Player and Most Improved Player, plus the President’s Trophy for the two players showing exceptional effort and the Chartres Trophy for the player with a very promising future in cricket.  Darren Gough stayed for pictures with all the award winners.
