HORSHAM CRICKET CLUB NEWSLETTER

MAY/JUNE 2023

Dear Members

Well, the weather has been the main talking point at Horsham so far this season – with outdoor training delayed and disrupted and the first weekend of senior matches completely washed out. Then when it finally stopped raining Southern Water cut off the supply to a large part of Horsham and the club had to close so the first Women’s home match was cancelled!

The Grounds team had spent the previous two weeks doing the hokey cokey with the covers in order to host Sussex 2nds in two matches, one of which was abandoned without a ball being bowled. There was a window in the weather the previous week which allowed Ravi Bopara & others the opportunity to launch sixes around the ground. And this week we were treated to another fine batting display by Sussex in front of a large crowd in the sunny beer garden.

It is almost inevitable that the next newsletter will talk of drought and the need to water the dry pitches…

Playing News
Overseas players
 – Ben Lister is back with us after his winter of International success. We are looking forward to all that he brings to the 1st team and his involvement at junior training on Friday evenings. Maggie Marten, also from New Zealand, has joined our Women’s team for the summer and has been helping with coaching with our mini cricket and U9’s – the youngsters are very lucky to have both Maggie and Ben to learn from.

League Matches are now underway with mixed fortunes for adult teams so far, but our Women are sitting at the top of their league and the Men’s 1st XI are third in the Premier.

Our Junior teams are doing well – when not frustrated by the weather and other clubs withdrawing teams from the leagues. We have more teams entered in the league then ever before, with three of the age groups entering teams in both their own age groups and one year up in order to give the players appropriate and challenging cricket . All fixtures and results can be seen on Play Cricket here

Thursday Cricket – we have several fixtures arranged on Thursdays throughout the season. Open to all – young or old, and all standards welcome – please let us know if you would like to be involved.

A full list of home fixtures which includes Sussex 2nd X1 and Over 50/60’s matches can be found here

Umpires and Scorers
For Matches to be played we need more than the 11 players – so much goes on in the background to get the games played and we have a good group of people who make this possible. Also integral to the game are the Umpires and Scorers. If you could offer your time to fill one of these important roles please let us know – full training and support will be given.

Fundraising and Social Events
The Golf Day back in April was a success both on and off the golf course – thank you to all who played .

We might have “that” Football match on in the clubhouse – if anyone cares….

Up to twelve U10’s teams from local clubs will compete for the trophy which will be presented by our new President- Chris Nash.
